Downtown East
A new-old habitat
Downtown East is a family-fun destination by NTUC and was first developed in 1986. Revamping it in 2013, the new Master Plan sought to integrate and update existing amenities with extended new ones so as to create a more exciting and captivating leisure experience with a sense of identity.
The Master Plan zoning comprises main components – the E-hub, the Members, Union and Community Engagement (MUCE) facilities, the Wild Wild Wet theme park and the Costa Sands Downtown East Resort – connected across the site by a new pedestrian network.
Fronting the Hotel, the Resort Pool takes centre stage. Its bold circular form leaves an indelible impression and features a children’s Play Pool with circular planters of coconut palm “floating” in the water. This leads to a circular coconut grove Hammock Deck. Separated by a floating bridge, the 25m Lap Pool is at the lower quadrant and features a bubbling Fountain Pool with massage hydro-jets. Poolside lounge areas are again designed in circles with sand or lawn under foot, dotted with swaying coconut palms. An iconic Water Pavilion with its ring of water curtain sculpturally gives an added dimension of movement and sound, beckoning to all.
Embracing nature
In Phase 1 of its design, mainly the accommodation component, a 117-room Hotel building, forms the central focus. Its L-shaped form affords sea views to a maximum number of rooms. Low-rise Chalets were planned around the site, encapsulating the Hotel. Zoned according to their contextual proximity, the chalets are designated the Beach, Park and Mangrove Chalets, capitalizing on the views to these varied site features and nestled amongst conserved trees and its particular natural habitat. Hence, the Chalets offer the members and public a diverse variety of choices for their holiday sojourn with its distinctive thematic landscape.
