Sengkang General Hospital
Greening is Healing
Key to the design of Sengkang General Hospital (SKH) was the provision of patient-centric spaces in a healing environment with clear and efficient wayfinding. Intrinsic to this is the thoughtful and purposeful inclusion of green spaces.
Responding to its urban context, the SKH Campus is surrounded with landscaping on the first storey, to soften the urban edges and encourage seamless integration with neighbouring HDB precincts. Greenery then flows from the building periphery and ground floor plazas to the upper levels, with the large roof garden at the 5th storey, making up almost the entire podium.
The pocket gardens at multiple levels serve to tie the different spaces and functions together. These terraces and courtyards are seen as restful sanctuaries for both patients and staff, as well as the general public. Visually, the greenery can be viewed from vantage points throughout the building, which is instrumental in creating a soothing environment.
Gardens such as 'Wellness Garden', 'Herbs & Spice Garden', 'Community Garden' and 'Butterfly Verandah' serve as spaces to encourage patients to participate in therapeutic activities. All these landscaping components help foster a restorative hospital environment not just for patients, but also for staff and visitors.
